Creative Responses is a symposium on the complex and important role of art, literature and other creative activities in dealing with a changing worldview, highlighting the interplay of the local, regional and global in environmental art.

The project Creative Responses is a collaboration between the University of Iceland’s Research Centre in Þingeyjarsveit and the University of Gothenburg, in partnership with Specta gallery in Copenhagen, Akureyri Art Museum and the University of Copenhagen, Department of Arts and Cultural Studies / Art & Earth Cluster.
Anthology and Art Exhibitions
The symposium is organized in relation to the publication of the anthology Creative Responses to Environmental Crises in Nordic Art and Literature (edited by Katarina Leppänen and Auður Aðalsteinsdóttir.
It will be followed by an art exhibition in Copenhagen at Gallery Specta, curated by Auður Aðalsteinsdóttir and Þórdís Aðalsteinsdóttir and featuring works by angela Snæfellsjökuls rawlings, Aurora Robson, Bolatta Silis-Høegh, Camilla Thorup, Hekla Dögg Jónsdóttir, Hildur Hákonardóttir, Jóna Hlíf Halldórsdóttir, Kristinn Már Pálmason, Laura Ortman, Peter Holst Henckel, Sigga Björg Sigurðardóttir, Sigrún Inga Hrólfsdóttir, Þórdís Aðalsteinsdóttir. The exhibition is open May 16 – June 21, 2025.
At the opening of the exhibition, Friday May 16 from 9:30 to 10:30, philosopher Ole Martin Sandberg chats with curators and artists of the exhibition on the topic “Art and Ecological Thinking”.
The exhibition then moves to Iceland where it will be open at Akureyri Art Museum from 27.11.2025 – 08.02.202. Here it will have additional material by students from Þingeyjarskóli. Biologist Skúli Skúlason will give a talk at the opening of the Icelandic part of the exhibition.
